SAVE SOCIAL HOUSING AT LITTLE MOUNTAIN

Social housing tenants speak out

At a rally at the Little Mountain Housing complex, where nearly 200 social housing units now sit empty awaiting the tender mercies of bulldozers, two of the small number of tenants remaining described the destruction of their community. Ingrid Steenhuisen spoke movingly about the willingness of neighbours to help each other through illnesses and family emergencies, and the loyalty that characterized the community for five decades. She expressed the regret felt by tenants who have been moved out that they have cut in line in front of other families who have been waiting, some for years, for social housing.
Alana Zubot, a young mother, said: "We aren't against redevelopment of the site. We know that the buildings are old and the land is extremely valuable. But why couldn't those of us with children who go to school nearby, and elderly people who have lived here for a long time, have been given the choice to stay in one part of the complex while the rest was redeveloped? And instead of promising that the government will just replace the number of social housing units lost on the site, why can't they add units...there are so many people who are homeless or on the edge of homelessness."
  • Stop needless displacements and let remaining families relocate on site during
construction of the promised social housing.
  • Re-open vacant homes to families in need of housing.
No bulldozing of any homes until construction begins.
  •  Increase the amount of social housing at Little Mountain, and keep all housing non-market.
  •  Keep public land public – No sale of public land to private interests.
  • Implement a comprehensive housing program. We need immediate action at all levels of government build housing accessible for people of all income levels.
